Irfan Pathan Points Finger at Dinesh Karthik for RCB’s Defeat to KKR

Irfan Pathan puts the blame on Dinesh Karthik for RCB's recent loss: Former Indian cricketer, now commentator, Irfan Pathan, criticizes Dinesh Karthik, the wicketkeeper-batsman of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, for his team's defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders.

In the 36th match of IPL 2024, held at Kolkata's Eden Gardens, RCB faced KKR. KKR, batting first, scored a massive 222 runs. Initially, RCB seemed to have control over the game during their batting innings.

However, by the end of the 18th over, RCB found themselves in a tough spot, needing 31 runs in 12 balls, with Karthik being the main hope.

During Andre Russell’s 19th over, Karthik, partnered with Karn Sharma, declined singles on the first two balls. He managed a six on the third ball but refused singles on the fourth and sixth deliveries. Ultimately, he got out on the last ball after hitting a four.

With 21 runs needed off the final over, Karn Sharma displayed his batting skills, hitting three sixes against Mitchell Starc in four balls, but got out eventually. RCB fell short by a solitary run, needing three off the last ball.

It's evident that had Dinesh Karthik opted for singles in the 19th over, the outcome might have been different.

Irfan Pathan, echoing this sentiment, squarely blames Karthik for RCB's loss. He expressed his views on Star Sports, saying, “Dinesh Karthik was responsible for the defeat. He missed taking singles twice, not trusting Karn Sharma, who later scored big off Mitchell Starc. Karthik’s decision led to RCB's loss and their exit from the playoff race.”

The former T20 World Cup winner emphasized that Karthik should have had faith in his partner’s abilities. “As a batsman, you must trust your partner. Karn is capable of scoring runs, but unfortunately, DK failed to grasp the situation and faced the consequences,” Irfan remarked.

With this defeat, RCB is almost out of the tournament, having just one win in eight matches. Another loss would officially eliminate them from the IPL 2024 playoff contention.

RCB will face an in-form Sunrisers Hyderabad in their upcoming match on April 25 at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.
