Ben Stokes opts out of IPL 2024: In a surprising turn of events, star cricketer Ben Stokes has made the decision to withdraw from the upcoming IPL 2024 season. Citing the need to manage his workload and prioritize his fitness, Stokes, who was the most expensive purchase for the Chennai Super Kings at INR 16.25 crore in the 2023 IPL auction, has opted to focus on his recovery and rehabilitation.
While the franchise has expressed its support for Stokes' decision, the question of whether the Chennai Super Kings will release him remains unanswered. The deadline for franchises to declare player retentions and releases for the 2024 IPL season is looming, with November 26 set as the crucial date. If Stokes is not released by then, the Super Kings will have the option to retain him for IPL 2025, potentially factoring him into their future plans.

Stokes' decision to skip IPL 2024 comes on the heels of his revelation about plans for knee surgery, a procedure he had postponed. The timeline for his return to the field will be determined based on a comprehensive rehabilitation program, in consultation with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
The all-rounder's struggles with a left knee injury were evident in the 2023 IPL season, where he played only two games. Initially starting the season as a specialist batter, Stokes' longstanding knee issue resurfaced during England's tour of New Zealand in February.
Despite his limited appearances in the IPL, Stokes showcased his batting prowess on the international stage during the T20 World Cup. Playing six out of nine games for England, he emerged as the team’s second-highest run-scorer, accumulating an impressive 304 runs with two half-centuries and a century. Notably, he did not bowl during the tournament.
Looking ahead, as the England Test captain, Stokes remains optimistic about participating in the upcoming five-Test series in India scheduled from January 25 to March 11. Expressing his unwavering commitment to recovery, he aims to be in prime condition for the challenging Test series in India, showcasing his determination to contribute to England's success on the international stage.
