Manasi Joshi won India first medal in Paralympics?: Indian presence at the Paralympics has become more and more prominent over the past couple of events. In the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, India won a whopping 19 medals, which included five golds, eight silvers, and six bronzes. India ranked an all-time high 24th in the Games.
India’s success in the 2020 Paralympics was down to two factors, increased domination in their current strong-suit of athletics, and winning medals in new sports. One of these sports where India won a medal for the first time in the Paralympics was badminton, where the country brought in an impressive four medals.

Pramod Bhagat
Pramod Bhagat became the first Indian to win a medal (that too a gold) for India in badminton in the Paralympics when he defeated Great Britain’s Daniel Barthell to snatch the top spot in Men’s singles SL3 event.
The 35-year-old developed symptoms of polio at the age of five. At 13, he started training and at 15 he partook in his first tournament. India’s most successful para-badminton athlete, Bhagat is a five-time gold medallist in the World Championship. He has also won gold at the Asian Para Games and the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) Games.

Who are the top badminton players in the world?
Krishna Nagar

Krishna Nagar became the second Indian to win a gold medal in badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Competing in the Men’s Singles SH6 event for short stature impairment, the Jaipur native was the second seed for the competition. The 24-year-old defeated Hong Kong’s Chu Mai Kai to secure the gold.
Krishna Nagar has also won a silver and two bronze medals at the World Championships, and a bronze medal at the Asian Para Games.

Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj

Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj won a silver medal in the Men’s Singles SL4 event for lower-limb impairment at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The then District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar (NOIDA) became the first Indian bureaucrat to win an Olympic medal in badminton. He also became the first Indian bureaucrat to win a medal in an International badminton Championship when he won a gold in the 2016 Asian Championship. Suhas is also a former Asian Para Games bronze medallist.

Who are the top badminton players in the world?
Manoj Sarkar
Manoj Sarkar is a highly accomplished Para-badminton player. Mostly a doubles partner for Pramod Bhagat, Manoj won the bronze medal in the same Men’s singles SL3 event as Bhagat.

Sarkar’s most accolades come in his time as a Double’s badminton player. He has won three gold medals two silvers, and four bronzes at the World Championships. He has also won a gold and a bronze at the Asian Championship and a silver and two bronze medals in the Asian Para Games.
