Indian squad for World Fencing Championships 2023: Bhavani Devi, the trailblazing Indian fencer, is all set to spearhead a 24-member Indian squad at the upcoming World Fencing Championships in 2023. The championship, scheduled to unfold in Milan, Italy, from July 22 to 30, is gearing up to witness participation from athletes representing over 150 nations. Notably, this event holds significant weight as it serves as a crucial qualifier for the esteemed Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Championship Overview

The Milan Convention Center (MiCo) will serve as the battleground where the world's finest fencers will converge to contend across three distinct categories: foil, epee, and sabre, both in individual and team events. The action-packed individual events are slated to transpire from July 22 to 27, followed by the team events scheduled from July 27 to 30.

What sets this edition of the Milan World Fencing Championships apart is that it falls within the exclusive window designated for Olympic fencing qualification rankings. This window commenced on April 3, 2023, and will culminate on April 1, 2024.

Bhavani Devi's Record Run

Bhavani Devi, India's sole representative in fencing at the Olympics, etched her name in the annals of history by securing India's first-ever medal at the Asian Fencing Championships. In a thrilling quarterfinal clash, she pulled off a stunning 15-10 victory against reigning world champion Misaki Emura of Japan. Notably, this marked her first triumph over her Japanese counterpart in four encounters.

The quarterfinal bout was a gripping see-saw battle, with Emura mounting a spectacular comeback from an 8-2 deficit to level the score at 10-10. Unfortunately, Bhavani Devi narrowly missed clinching silver or gold when she suffered a heartbreaking defeat by a single point in the semifinals to Uzbekistan’s world No. 79, Zaynab Dayibekova.

Despite India's prolonged history in fencing since the establishment of the World Fencing Championships in 1921, a medal has remained elusive. Bhavani Devi, India's ace fencer, is determined to change this narrative.
